From my 20 year career working as a psychotherapist and also a transformative life coach, there is one thing that I see that gets in the way of people getting support time and time again…
This one thing is the reason that people stay stuck and don’t ask for support even though they would really benefit from it.
As someone in the helping profession, I love to help people!
I love that moment when someone sees something that will forever change their lives!
But there’s so many people I know I could help, but they don’t go for it.
Do you know why?
It’s this…
Lack of hope.
Because people can’t change.
Or can they?
I work in the business of change, and so I witness change every single day. In fact, all day, every day.
I’m so used to seeing people change, and even transform, that it seems obvious to me that people can change.
But that doesn’t seem obvious for some people. In fact, as far as they’re concerned, change isn’t possible. Because here’s the thing…
We don’t see what’s possible for ourselves, we see what we think is possible
Because you’re limited by your thinking, you really can’t see what’s possible for yourself. In other words, you don’t have hope.
I think the most helpful thing that I’ve ever learnt is that human beings are not fixed. We are not confined to one state of being, or one fixed personality.
We are however, creatures of habit, and we have habitual ways of thinking, acting, and being.
Because we are creatures of habit, the moment we stop thinking that way, acting that way, or we shift into a different state of being, we are changed. This is obvious to me. But it wasn’t always.
I used to think that I was forever stuck as someone who would experience depression, anxiety and burn out. I used to believe that I would always struggle in relationships, and that I would never be able to make life work.
In fact, when I once went for some CBT for my forth episode of depression back in 2014, the therapist told me that I would always struggle with depression. They took away my hope.
But what’s amazing, is that for the last 8 years since learning the things I now teach, is that I’ve only ever experienced a passing low mood, and nothing that’s stuck. Because – people change.
Once you see that change is possible, once you have hope, you can do whatever it is you want to do to make change that lasts.
That’s where my work comes in…
