Understand what’s keeping you stuck — and make lasting change
If anxiety, stress, overthinking, burnout or difficult experiences from your past are affecting how you feel or live your life, CBT therapy can help you understand what is happening and change the patterns that are keeping the problem going.
I’m Chris Finn, a BABCP-accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. I offer evidence-based, personalised CBT therapy for adults in person in Ferndown, Dorset and online.
What I Can Help With
CBT can be helpful when thoughts, emotions and behaviours have become caught in patterns that are difficult to change on your own. I work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties, including:
Anxiety & Excessive Worry
If your mind is constantly anticipating problems, analysing situations or asking “what if?”, CBT can help you understand the cycle that keeps anxiety going and develop a different way of responding to it.
Stress & Burnout
When pressure has been building for too long, it can become difficult to switch off, recover or feel like yourself. Therapy can help you understand what has contributed to the problem and make sustainable changes rather than simply trying to push through it.
Overthinking & Rumination
Repeatedly analysing conversations, decisions, mistakes or future possibilities can feel productive while actually keeping you stuck. CBT can help you recognise these patterns and reduce their hold over you.
Low Confidence & Self-Esteem
Long-standing negative beliefs about yourself can influence relationships, work and the choices you make. CBT can help you understand where these patterns come from and develop a more balanced and flexible view of yourself.
Perfectionism
High standards can be valuable, but when your self-worth depends on meeting them they can create anxiety, procrastination, overworking and constant dissatisfaction. CBT can help you retain ambition without being controlled by perfectionism.
Difficult Experiences & Trauma
Experiences from the past can continue to affect how you think, feel and respond in the present. Where appropriate, CBT can help you process difficult experiences and reduce their ongoing impact.
How CBT Works
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is based on the idea that the way we think, feel and behave are closely connected. Difficulties often persist not simply because something upsetting happened, but because understandable patterns of thinking and responding continue to keep the problem going.
In therapy, we work together to understand those patterns in the context of your own life.
That might involve noticing how worry leads to reassurance-seeking, how perfectionism creates avoidance or overworking, or how trying to suppress difficult thoughts can sometimes make them even more persistent.
CBT is practical as well as reflective. Once we understand what is maintaining the difficulty, we can experiment with different ways of thinking and responding and see what genuinely helps.
My approach is collaborative and personalised rather than formulaic. CBT provides a strong evidence-based framework, but therapy should still make sense for you as an individual rather than feel like you are being taken through a manual.
What to Expect From Therapy With Me
Therapy starts with understanding what is happening for you and what you would like to change. We’ll look at how the problem developed, what may be keeping it going now and what would make therapy genuinely useful to you.
From there, we’ll agree a clear focus for our work together. Sessions are collaborative and practical, with plenty of space to think things through rather than simply being given techniques or advice.
Depending on what you are experiencing, we might work on changing patterns of worry, avoidance, self-criticism, perfectionism or other behaviours that are keeping you stuck. You may also experiment with things between sessions so that what we discuss begins to translate into real change in everyday life.
I’ll explain the rationale behind what we are doing so that therapy makes sense rather than feeling like a series of exercises. The aim is not simply to help you feel better during our sessions, but to help you develop an understanding and approach that continues to be useful long after therapy ends.
A Collaborative Approach
I won’t tell you how you should live your life or assume that one approach works for everybody. Good therapy involves bringing together my clinical experience with your understanding of yourself, your circumstances and what matters to you.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
There is no fixed number that is right for everyone. Some people come with a relatively focused difficulty and benefit from a shorter period of therapy, while more complex or long-standing problems may require more time.
We’ll review progress together throughout therapy so that there is always a clear reason for continuing.
